The services of Robert Bruce Harris, Golf Course Architect, were secured on May 27, 1959 to prepare preliminary drawings and specifications for an 18 hole regulation course and an 18 hole par 3 course to be located on the Miami well field that was developed in 1955.  The contract with Arnett-Roller Co. was approved March 1960. The courses were completed in November 1960.

The name "Kittyhawk Golf Course" resulted from a public contest conducted specifically for the naming of this area for the golf courses.  The Hawk Course (regulation) was opened to the public for play on June 29, 1961, and the Kitty (Executive) opened on June 30, 1961.

In 1963, a contract was awarded to Oberer Construction for a new regulation 18 hole course.  This course was opened in 1965 and is called the Eagle Course.

Since these courses sit in the center of the Miami Well Field, the supply and distribution of water is the top priority.  The golf course provides excellent use and cover for an area that needs to be protected.  Additionally, the Water Department initiated contracts for the construction of the lagoon recharging system that brought about the construction of an additional thirty-two (32) lakes in 1989 and 1990.

The Kittyhawk Golf Course was enrolled in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses in 1999 and earned a certificate of achievement for Environmental Planning in February of 2000.
